Science is important because it’s the ONLY way we have of finding out how the world works. PS. A paleontologist is a scientist too!

There are all kinds of problems and challenges facing us. Progess in science and technology is the key to solving most, probably all, of them. You can’t get much more important than that! But that’s not what made me want to work in science in the first place. I did that because I liked science subjects, and there was a lot less essay-writing than in English and History. And, Ian’s right of course, a palaeontologist is a scientist. Keep in mind, for your future, that the neatest progress often happens when different kinds of scientist work together – you may recall in Jurassic park 2 or 3, some computer modelling was used to help figure out what a raptor call sounded like.

It’s important to me because it explains how everything in the world around us works and fits together.

Science is important to me because….it is fun! Lots of people spend there spare time doing sodoku, crosswords or any number of games and puzzles on their phones. All this taps into a fundamental trait of human nature that we just love solving problems (probably why we are so successful as a species). As a scientist this is what you get paid to do rather than just under your desk when you should be doing something else instead!
