I didn’t really think about it that much – I always enjoyed science and found I was better at it than other things though.

My earliest memory is that I wanted to be a superhero. When I became a bit more mature, I still wanted to be a superhero. Then, I became a superhero – called “Cubeman”, because if anyone, anywhere, had a messed up Rubik’s cube, I was ready to fly to the disaster zone and get all the colours in the right place in under a minute. But that got boring, so I became a scientist.

Yes, I was naturally drawn to being a scientist because I was interested in the natural world and the way it works. I find it very strange when I meet people who aren’t interested in the world they live in!!! I think young people have a sense of wonder, and it’s a shame that as people get older, sometimes they lose that – those who work in science, I would say, have kept their sense of fascination about the world, which is a nice way to be!!
