The list is indeed endless – I find most science interesting. But I’m most interested in maths and physics – things like electricity and astronomy for example.

I am interested in renewable energy generation (wind, biofuels) – maybe because I live in NE Scotland and its very windy!

Also recently my family got a 100% electric car – a Nissan Leaf. Its full of gadgets and emits zero carbon emissions! The technology behind the car is very exciting and soon there will be many more electric cars driving around the country.

The most interesting thing for me is consciousness. Can we make robots that are actually and truly conscious, just like you and me? That is, they are aware of themselves, they have feelings, etc. ? And if not, why not? What do we have that computers don’t have? We are just complex machines, and we can make complex machines, and I believe we can make them do anything that we can do. But if you make a robot that really is conscious, should have a birth certificate? Should it fill in a census form? Would it be allowed to take part in Britain’s Got Talent? I’m equally interested in fundamental physics (wave, particles, their interactions, quantum stuff, string theory, etc…) since, ultimately, that’s what consciousness, just like everything else, is made of (probably).

I’m most interested in diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. I am both horrified and fascinated by all the things that can infect us and make us sick. How do we get infected and what does our body do to fight these infections? I like to learn about the amazing way our body can fight off these invaders.

I find most areas of science interesting. Apart from my own research, I find nature (things like evolution and genetics) and astrophysics very interesting. I must admit that I don’t find things with real-world applications as interesting as questions about the Universe and our evolution, so although I am certainly in favour of looking after the environment, it’s not something I would read about for fun!!
