I watch lots and lots of TV. I think this sort of behaviour is not very common among scientists, but there certainly are a few of us who like to just sit there vegging out with the remote. But I don’t watch endless soaps or hopeless US teen dramas like Orange Juice county — I like to lay there soaking up information, from rolling news and documentaries, as well as good films. When my wife and son are not around, and if they’re on, I also love to see XFactor or BGT auditions — I am completely fascinated by the psychology of some of the people who audition – it’s very interesting when they think they’re good, but they’re absolutely awful, and vice versa.

Also, I play classical guitar, jog, read science-fiction/fantasy, and try to think up activities that will unglue my son from playing Spore on his computer.
