This is a core question in Psychology. Most people agree that personality is the result of what they call “Nature” and “Nurture”. Nature is what we have inherited from our parents, and Nurture is the environment that you’ve been brought up in. What is hotly debated in Psychology, is how muchy of our personality is “hard-wired” from our parents, and how much is influenced by our environment. It’s a difficult question to answer, but researchers try to tackle this by looking at twins who have been separated at birth — often they are very similar to each other, even though they have never met and live in a totally different environment (with different families). This gives us strong evidence that Nature is a pretty big component of our personalities!

I’m guessing it’s a mixture of genes and also how you’ve been brought up – both nurture and nature.
