It is important to study hard, and make the right choices at School, College and University if you want to be a scientist. When choosing the subjects you are going study, try to pick those that will help you to get the career you want, even if they are considered to be tougher!
Scientists often follow hunches, but we also read each other’s work a lot and try to push back the boundaries of the area we are studying little by little by doing new studies that go a little further than the studies that have been done before. Sometimes though, we might have a great idea that hasn’t been thought of by anybody before – in that case, if we have read around the subject enough to check that it really is a good idea, then we would definitely push ahead with that too!
If you have hunches and are itching to follow them you have the beginnings of a good scientist. Always back up your hunch with scientific evidence. We spend a lot of time searching on-line data bases using key-words to see what else has been published in our fields and to find evidence for our hunches.
Being a scientist, like any job has its ups and downs.
I’d think about what job you’d like in the end and head that way but it doesn’t hurt to leave a few options open and its also not a problem to switch later on down the line.
