• Question: if god made the world then why do bad things happen to people e.g. death of a family member??

      I’m afraid that it is extremely unlikely that the world was made by any supernatural creature.

      Good question. The answer is that God probably did not create the world – in fact I don’t really believe he exists.

      So, the Pope was recently asked basically the same question, and his answer was:

      “And we do not have the answers, but we know that Jesus suffered as you do, an innocent, and that the true God who is revealed in Jesus is by your side.”

      So, the Pope clearly doesn’t have a clue. This is partly why I became a scientist – I prefer clear thinking, and the absence of an embarrassing dress code.

      Imagine if people kept being born (generally a very happy event) but nobody died- we soon would have far too many people. So although it is really sad when someone we love passes away, it is important to remember that it is something that, over time, is balanced by the joy we feel when a new family member arrives.
