• Question: Everyone likes diffrent things to eat, E.G. my friends like tomatoes but I hate them. Yet everyone(even my guinea pig) agrees that rotten food is distgusting, even if your mouth is closed and you dont know what it is.So why is it that there is a universal scale for horrible food? We’re evolved to find rotten food disgusting because it could make us sick. When our ancestors were living in the wild, having a dodgy tummy for a few days would slow us down and put us in serious danger of being caught and eaten by a hungry predator! You’re guinea pig and you aren’t so different – you both want to stay alive!

This is the body’s clever way of stopping you from eating something that may harm you – evolution is a wonderful thing!

On the other hand, there certainly are a few creatures that like rotten food – vultures are the obvious example. They specialise in rotting carcases that everyone else leaves alone — their secret is that they have extremely strong stomach acid (and probably very acidic saliva too), so this kills all the nasties in rotten food that would otherwise make them ill. A really interesting question though: does rotten food smell nice to a vulture? I think it probably does!

I like the question, must be survival instinct so we don’t get sick! We do eat parmesan cheese though and that smells pretty bad…
