Hi, I pretty much stopped doing lab work about 12 months ago although I do sometimes wander in to the lab to do small experiments. Although now I just get in the way because I don’t know where anything is kept anymore or what the “system” is (eg. for replacing empty pipette tip boxes, people get very upset if you don’t replace empty tip boxes). I mostly plan experiments with students and help them to analyse their data. That’s what I did ALL day yesterday so didn’t get to answer as many I’m a Scientist questions as I planned to.

For most of the work I do, I’m the boss and there are researchers and/or PhD students who do experiments. But I do lots of experiments myself too.

I do some of the experiments and practical work myself as well as the stuff sitting at my computer reading and writing documents.

I have doctoral students and research assistants who do a lot of the time consuming experimental work on my behalf, but I do still spend a proportion of my time doing practical experiments myself.
